Pink roses and leaves on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two pink roses in full bloom, one lower and one higher on the forearm, joined by thin green stems, leaves and a couple of small closed buds. The petals are outlined in dark ink with soft pink shading, and the leaves are filled in green with some darker detailing. The forearm sits against a blue knit sweater on a pale background, with the design wrapping partly around the arm.

Mrs Dunmore's cutting arrived in a damp copy of the Herald, tied up with garden string, and she would not let me unwrap it until the Thursday bus had gone past the crossing. Roses travel like gossip, she said. Watch them leave and they sulk.

The bush it came from grew against the back wall of her cottage on Church Lane, a pale pink old variety with blooms so full they looked heavy enough to tip over. Her husband Walter had planted it the spring before he shipped out with the Royal Navy, and it had flowered every June since, the only thing in Aldbury that did exactly what it was told. She had not cut it back in four years. That was why she wanted it moved.
My father set the cutting in the bed beside our front gate, where it could take the morning sun and Mrs Dunmore could see it from her kitchen window. He said it would sulk for a year before it bloomed. It did not sulk. By the second June it had two flowers, one low on the stem and one higher up, and a pair of closed buds nobody dared to touch. Mrs Dunmore stood at the gate every evening with her arms folded, counting petals.
On the last Thursday of that June the bus came and went and no letter came with it. Mrs Dunmore's blind stayed down. I cut the higher bloom and carried it up Church Lane wrapped in the same newspaper, and knocked, and when she opened the door she looked at the flower for a long time before she took it. He always said they came out in twos, she said, and shut the door gently, as if the house were asleep.
