Colour tattoo of a pink peony with green leaves across the forearm, drawn in a botanical style with bold black outlines.

Peony and leaves on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large pink peony with several layered petals sits across the forearm, shaded in soft reds and highlighted in lighter tones. Green leaves with dark outlines spread out from the flower towards the wrist and elbow. The bold black linework and smooth colour fill give the design a clean, illustrative finish against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The peony came up out of the wet ground behind the fish sheds the spring the gulls stopped nesting on the slipway. Nobody in Porthgarrow had planted it. Old Mags Trevail said it had come with the tide, the way the bottle with the letter came, and she put a bucket over it so the goats would not have it.

By June the bucket had been lifted three times and put back, and the bloom was the size of a child's head, pink as the inside of a shell and heavy enough to bow the stem to the stones. Tomas Penrose, who mended nets for his keep, said a flower that heavy ought to be cut and sold to the inland women who came down on the Thursday bus. His mother told him to hold his tongue and fetch water.

The night the lifeboat went out for the Maren Rose, the peony was still in full head, and the wind came off the sea so hard that every shutter in the harbour rattled. Mags sat at her window with a candle and watched the petals lift and turn in the dark like the sails of a boat that was coming home. When the boat came in at dawn, all six men were aboard her, and the bucket was lying on its side in the yard where the wind had taken it.

They say the peony went over that autumn and never came up again. Mags swept the petals off the slipway herself, one at a time, and kept the last one pressed in a book of tide tables. It is still there, pink at the heart, if you ask for it and she trusts you enough to open the page.
