Blueberry sprig around a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A sprig of blueberries wraps around the inner forearm, with green leaves along a thin stem and clusters of dark blue-purple berries at either end. The leaves and stems are shaded in several tones of green with dark outlines, and the berries have small highlights. The design is centred on the forearm against plain skin, with dark clothing visible behind.

The blueberry bushes on the Tarn Moor had been picked clean by the time Ada Pennock walked up from the village, but she knew where the late ones hid, under the heather where the sun never reached. Her grandfather had taught her that. He had also taught her that a berry picked in anger tastes of iron, so she sat down on the warm stone wall and ate slowly, one after another, until her fingers were stained the colour of old ink.

The letter from the council was folded in her coat pocket. It said the moor was to be fenced for a water board that had never once in ninety years come to look at it. Ada read it twice, then a third time out of spite, and found nothing in it she had not already guessed. She thought of the wrapping of bramble that had once run along the lane to the church, how it had been torn out in the spring of the big storm and never replanted.
She stood, brushed the dust from her knees, and started back down the path with a handful of berries cupped against her chest like something that might escape. At the gate she stopped and pressed one into the dirt beside the post, then another, then three more in a loose line toward the fence the men had not yet built.
By the time the surveyors came in June, a thin green stem had pushed up through the gravel, and by August it had climbed the new posts, leaves curling like small hands, dark fruit hanging where the wire should have been.
