Pink roses and swirls flash design

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

The drawing shows two pink roses and a pink daisy-style flower joined by bold black scrolling swirls and curling tendrils. The roses and flower are rendered with solid pink fills, smooth outlines and small highlights, while the swirls are heavy black linework. Grey splatter marks sit across a plain white background, and the three flower groups are arranged diagonally across the page.

The frost had got into the glasshouse again, so you spent the first hour of the morning feeding the paraffin heater and setting a bucket of water beside the boots. Mrs Ferrier's roses still stood in their clay pots along the south wall, pink as boiled sweets against the grey, and the daisies she had raised from seed in a biscuit tin leaned towards the one clean pane where the light came through.

Her son wanted the place sold. He had said so over the Christmas pudding, and again at the gate with his hands jammed in his coat pockets, not once looking at the glass. You didn't argue. You cut back the long canes where the black rot had started, the way she had shown you, and bound the trailing stems to the wire with strips of old tea towel, coiling each tendril round until the whole thing looked less like a fight and more like a slow dance.

By noon the sleet had thinned to a watery sun across the yard. Under the potting bench you found the tin of seed packets, each one labelled in her careful capitals: DAISY, FOR THE GATE. Her hand had shaken badly near the end, but the loops of the letters were still there. You tipped the last few seeds into your palm and understood that you could not sow them until spring, and that was rather the point of them.

In March, when the gate was painted and the sale board stood empty at the bend of the lane, you pressed the first seed into the damp soil beside the old gatepost. Pink came up before the leaves did, one bloom bright enough to slow the van at the corner. Anyone passing would think the place had always looked like that, a sudden colour against a grey field, and you supposed it had, only it had needed someone to keep it going.
