Magenta flowers with black and grey tendrils

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A cluster of magenta flowers sits at the centre of a branching design, with black and grey tendrils curling outwards and upwards. Fine circles and small rings are scattered around the stems and blooms, adding texture to the open composition. The artwork uses smooth, solid fills for the flowers and tapered lines for the swirls, set against a plain white background.

You keep the vine in a tin bucket wedged behind the spice rack, because the cook before you said a plant on a ship needs something to hold on to. Nobody else aboard will admit to watering it. The Marguerite Vale is four days out of Valparaíso with a hold full of copper ore and a bosun who thinks flowers are bad luck, so you do it at dawn, before the galley fire is lit, while the kettle ticks and the deck above you groans.

The cutting came off a cliff wall in port, a magenta climber with fleshy blooms that open like fists unclenching. Its tendrils have already found the ventilation grille and the brass hook where the ladle hangs. Each morning there are new buds, and each morning you find another grey curl reaching for the porthole, as if it has been told the sea is nothing but a larger room it has yet to furnish.

On the fourth night the swell rose and the bucket went over. You knelt in the scalded water with the cook's knife in one hand and a rag in the other, and saw that the roots had wound themselves around the bolt holding the stove down. You cut nothing. You bent the stems up, tied them with twine from the bread bag, and pinned the lot to the bulkhead with a wooden spoon.

At breakfast the bosun came in, stopped, and looked at the wall for a long time. "Bad luck," he said. Then he took a bowl of porridge and ate it standing, eyes on the blooms, and said nothing more about it. The flowers kept opening all the way to Falmouth.
