The snow closed the Hallam pass on Tuesday, so the carrier has not come up from Glossop and I have had nothing to do but finish the gate for Mrs Ashdown at the top farm. You will laugh. I have spent three evenings bending the last scroll of it, the one that curls back on itself like a fern unrolling, and Mr Pryce says it is too tight to bear weight. I say it will hold because it has to. The lilies are the hard part. Mr Pryce wanted them cut from sheet, but I sat up with the drawing and worked the petals out of copper so the pink would catch the lamp when the light comes in low.

Yesterday the wind dropped and I walked the old packhorse road to the cairn to see if the drifts had moved. A man was there with a surveyor's chain, measuring nothing I could see, and he asked me the way to the chapel. I pointed at the wrong ridge. I think he knew it, because he thanked me and went on regardless, his boots going in to the knee.

I am sending you two of the buds I pressed in the back of the almanac. They are not much to look at now, but you always said pink was a colour that wanted attention. Tell Dad the forge is warm and I am eating properly, and that the gate will be hung before the thaw, black and curling, with the lilies standing up through the iron as if they grew there.
