Pink watercolour flowers across a back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
Three pink flowers on loose, thin stems run down the centre of a bare back, with the top bloom sitting near the shoulder blades. The petals are built from soft washes of magenta and pink with darker accents, and the stems are drawn in fine black lines that fade out in places. Small orange and pink splashes scatter around the design, and the plain skin behind it keeps the focus on the artwork.

Dear Thessaly, you will laugh when I tell you the master has finally let me touch the good madder. Forty years he has kept it locked in the blue jar by the kiln, and yesterday he handed me the brush and said, "Wet the paper first, boy, or the colour will sit on it like a bad opinion." So I wet it. Then I dropped the rose-red wash across the sheet in one pass and watched it bloom outward, the edges going soft and feathery where the water had got under it.

We were painting the garden wall for the widow on the Via Stabiana, three stems of mallow rising from the plaster. The master wanted them tall and leaning, as if they had been trying to reach the window. I drew the stems in a thin ink he makes from burnt vine and soot, and I let them fade where the brush ran dry, because he says a stem should look like it is thinking about giving up.
I did the last flower at dusk, with the lamp smoking beside me. Halfway through, my hand slipped and a fleck of dark ink struck the petals. I nearly wept. The master studied it a long while, then flicked a spatter of orange across the whole panel with the back of his fingers and said, "Now it is a garden, not a picture." The widow paid us in figs and a fine cheese.
Come home at the new moon and I will show you the wall. Bring your sandals, the Stabiana is mud when it rains. Your brother, Corvus.
