The two swans came down onto the loch at Skerra in the week the herring boats went out for the last time before winter, and nobody on the island could say where they had come from. Old Morag who kept the ferry slip said they had flown over from the drowned village under the sea, and folk believed her, because she had never once been wrong about the weather.

Ishbel, who was seventeen and impatient, wanted them gone before her wedding. Her betrothed, Calum, had gone out in the big boat with his brothers and had not come in. The swans stayed. Every evening they swam side by side with their necks bent so their heads met in the water, and every evening Ishbel stood on the slip and watched them until the light went.
On the ninth night she took a length of red wool from her mother's basket and waded into the shallows. The cob hissed and the pen did not move. She tied one end to the pen's left wing and the other to the cob's right, and when she stepped back the two birds lifted together, wings beating the water into white, and flew low over the headland toward the open sea where the boats had gone.
Calum walked in at dawn, soaked to the thigh, with the red thread knotted round his wrist. He said a pair of swans had come out of the fog and led the boat home through the skerries, and that he had kept his eyes on their necks the whole way, because they made a shape against the grey that he could steer by. Morag said nothing about it. She only put the kettle on and said the swans would come back in autumn, and that a promise tied with wool was the only kind that held in weather like this.
