Winged heart with keyhole and flourishes
Mixed · Flash
A pink heart with a keyhole at its centre sits between two pink wings, with a small crown-like motif at the top. Dark black scrollwork and pink five-petal flowers surround the heart and extend outwards on both sides. The design uses bold outlines and flat pink fills with some shading on the heart and wings, set against a plain white background.

Sit down, the wind will only get worse before the bell. You want the story of the locksmith's daughter who lived above the pass at Cwm Ddu? Then listen, because I'll not tell it twice.

Her father made locks for every gate between the two valleys, and he made them in the shape of hearts, because he said a lock that looked like a gift was harder to be angry at. Mared learned the work at his bench, filing brass and stamping a tiny crown onto the bow of each key so the carters would know whose hand had made it. When the snows came early that year, a rider came over the pass with a box no bigger than a loaf, bound in rope and wrapped in black ribbon, and asked her to open it without breaking anything inside.
She took three days. Lamp oil, a bent pin, the patience of a heron standing in a cold stream. On the third night the lock gave with a sound like a bird lifting off a wall, and the lid rose. The box was empty except for a pair of wings folded flat as old letters, pink as foxglove. The rider only laughed and said the wings had been inside all along, waiting for someone patient enough to open the heart that held them.
Mared never learned who he was. But on still mornings, if you climb to the pass before the mist lifts, you can see the flowers she planted on the gate posts, and hear the keyhole humming when the wind goes through it.
