Swirling heart and bird design
Mixed · Flash
A tattoo design drawn on a plain white background, showing a heart outlined in flowing black swirls with a small bird shape at the upper right. Purple dots and streaks sit along the lines of the design. The bold, curling strokes taper at their ends and flow down the composition in an S-shaped path.

Sit down, the queue will keep, it always does at Halden Bridge. The bird came over the wire at dusk, which is the wrong hour for birds and the right hour for trouble. Corporal Ives swore it was a swift, but swifts do not carry a heart in their beaks, and this one had one, folded over and bound round with black thread like a parcel wrapped by someone in a hurry.

The guard on the barrier that night was Tomas Vell, a man who stamped papers without reading them, until the bird landed on the painted post beside him and shook loose a little dust of violet. He caught some on his thumb. It was the colour of plums left too long in a cellar, and it would not wash off for a week. Nobody in the line noticed. A woman with a case of spoons was arguing about her visa, and a boy kept asking whether the bird was lost.
Vell unfolded the heart when the queue had thinned. The paper inside was written in loops that rose and fell like the bird's own tail, and it was addressed to nobody at the crossing. It said only: the river road is open, your father's lamp is still in the window, come home the long way round. Vell read it twice, then folded it along the same creases, tucked it into his breast pocket, and waved the next car through with a hand that still bore the faint purple of the bird's dust.
