Dad was already gone to the early shift at Harrow Lane, and his lamp was still on the hook by the door, the brass gone green where the damp gets at it.

Mr Pringle came round with the paraffin and asked after you. I told him you were doing well in Hull, gutting cod for the trawler men, and he said that was a decent trade for a girl with steady hands. I didn't tell him you wrote that the gulls there scream like the winding gear. I kept that back for myself.

The thing I really wanted to tell you is this. Under the rag in the bottom drawer I found the old calendar picture, the one with the two fish, the blue-green one swimming up and the red one swimming down, tied together at the mouth with a black cord. Mam says they're the stars for February and March, which is us, born the same week. I've decided they're only the two of us, pulling opposite ways and still held fast.

Don't come home for Christmas on my account. Keep the knife sharp and the wages sewn in your coat. When the cage comes up with Dad I'll be at the top of the stairs with the kettle on, and I'll look for the red one first, because it's always the last one up.
