Turtle with compass shell on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A green sea turtle sits in profile with a compass rose across its shell, its yellow and black star points and a small red centre stone clearly drawn, and a letter N visible on the dial. Its flippers and tail curl into yellow-tan wave shapes, with blue-grey clouds or sea behind it. Bold black outlines define the forms, and the shading is smooth and soft, with colour dominating the design on a muscular lower leg.

Eudoros had been promised the sea turtle would lead them home, and for three grey days off the Dodecanese he had believed none of it. The bronze wind-dial in his lap was cracked along one arm, its eight points worn smooth by a sailmaker's thumb until only the N still held its letter. The crew of the Pleiad did not trust the dial, and they did not trust him either, a Kretan boy with his dead father's stylus and no real place aboard.

On the fourth dawn the turtle came up beside the hull, lifting its old head out of the swell as though it had been waiting. Its shell caught the first light, and its flippers unfurled through the water like a wave breaking slowly. Captain Hipparchos swore at the helmsman, then went quiet and told him to bring the ship round. Eudoros watched the creature dive and surface, dive and surface, always a stone's throw ahead and always to the west of where the N said west ought to be. The red garnet at the dial's heart kept pulling his eye back to the rail, and at last he understood he had been reading the wrong point.
By afternoon clouds had gathered over the hills, heavy and blue-grey, and the turtle slipped under the swell and did not come up again. Hipparchos asked him, quietly, what the boy had seen. Eudoros set the dial on the rail and turned it until the garnet sat square to the bow. The N, he said, had never meant north. It meant the sea turtle's road, and the road was home.
Land rose out of the haze before sunset, the white harbour wall of Kos, and the crew cheered in a language Eudoros had only half learned. He did not cheer. He watched the water where the turtle had gone under, flat and green as old bronze, and left the dial on the rail for whoever came next.
