Rabbit with red brush strokes on an upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A rabbit or hare in mid-stride is shown in profile, with its ears swept back and one eye clearly defined. The body is rendered with soft brown, orange and yellow shading and dark grey accents, while loose red and blue brush-like strokes curve around the figure. The design fills the frame against smooth skin, with dark fabric visible at the top left.

By the cloakroom hung the spring poster the sign-writer had painted in March: a hare caught mid-leap, ears laid flat along its back, one amber eye fixed on something beyond the frame. Every girl who came in that season said it looked ready to bolt off the paper. You and Maureen had argued for a month over whether it was running towards the door or away from it. She said away. You said it was always going to be trying to get back.
When you went to fetch her coat, the poster was gone. Someone had peeled it from the wall and left only a ghost of its corners and a few brushed strokes of red paint along the plaster, curving down towards the fire door. Maureen was already outside, laughing at you through the glass, her scarf caught on the handle. You pushed the door open and followed the marks across the car park, half expecting to see the hare pausing at the kerb, ears up, waiting for the next tune.
