Pistol in a lace garter on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of an upper thigh with a realistic tattoo of a pistol, shown from the side with its barrel pointing downwards. The gun is wrapped in a black lace garter strap that is drawn with fine detail, and the metal has grey shading with a small green highlight near the top. The frame is cropped to the thigh, with a hand holding a patterned skirt above the tattoo and a bed with floral bedding in the background.

The pistol came across my counter wrapped in black lace, and that was the first thing I didn't understand. Mr Okafor next door had been pawning watches on Lisle Street since 1931, and he had never once brought me anything with a bow on it. The girl who laid it down was twenty at most, chewing the edge of her thumbnail, and she asked for four pounds without looking at the scales.

I unhooked the garter with a bent hairpin. Under the lace the revolver was grey and cold, its barrel gleaming green near the top where the damp had got into the brass. The lace itself was good, Brussels or near enough, with a scalloped edge that someone had mended twice. She said it had been her mother's, the only thing left from a dance hall in Brighton, and the pistol had been her father's from Caen, a man who came home and never spoke of it again.

I told her I could lend four pounds on the lace alone. She shook her head, took the pistol back, and buckled it on again above her knee as though it weighed nothing. At the door she turned, rain blowing in behind her, and asked whether I'd ever lost anything I couldn't name.

I still have the pawn slip she left on the counter. It is unsigned, and in the corner someone has drawn a small green dot, the way you'd mark a spot you meant to come back to.
