The big top had been sold off in pieces by October, so Ada folded the last of the red velvet on the hay bales behind the caravans. Nobody else was left to do it. Lenny had gone to a fairground in Skegness with the ponies, and the strongman had taken a job loading lorries in Hull. Mr Vantongeren still walked to the snake box each morning and tapped the lid with his cane, as if the show might yet need her.

The snake was called Duchess, a grey-banded python who had travelled with the show since before Ada was born. When she was let out into the sawdust she moved in long, slow S-shapes, the way smoke leans over a field before it lifts. Vantongeren said she remembered every town. He said it on the last night in Boston, when the lamps were already out and the rain came sideways off the Wash.
A buyer arrived from a zoo in Leeds with a clipboard and a van that had a working heater. He weighed Duchess in a canvas sack and wrote numbers down. Vantongeren signed without reading the page. Ada watched the van lights climb the lane until the hedges swallowed them, then went back to the box, where the old man sat with his hands flat on his knees.
'She'll be warm,' he said. 'That's what they promised me.' In the morning Ada crossed the empty ring and found a single long loop pressed into the sawdust, the shape Duchess had left going out through the tent flap. Ada left it where it lay and let the wind take it.
