Pistol outline tattoo on the back of a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is photographed under blue ultraviolet light, with a pistol outline glowing pale against the dark skin. The linework is a single continuous outline showing the slide, trigger guard, grip and frame, with no visible shading. The blue light fills most of the frame, and the hand is shown from the back against a blurred background.

Don't look at me like that, I'm getting to it. The Palais on the front had blue lamps in those days, put up after the war so the couples could find each other in the dark, and the powder on the girls' collars went like frost under them. Nobody had a name for what Mick Harrow was doing with his pen and a pot of luminous paint. He just worked along the back row on a Saturday and asked the lads if they fancied a hand.

He drew what they gave him. A bicycle clip. A swallow. And one night, for Dennis Vane, a pistol, the shape of the thing Dennis had carried home from France in a biscuit tin and never spoken of since. Mick traced it in one unbroken line, slide and guard and grip, no shading, because shading was for men who meant to stay put. Under the blue it sat across the back of the hand like something remembered rather than held.

Dennis came back the next week and asked for it again, and then again, because every time he reached for his tea he saw it glowing and set the cup down instead of gripping it. Mick told him paint wears off, but Dennis said he'd keep at it, and he did, a dab of paint every Saturday for a year.

On the last Saturday he stood at the bar with his hand flat on the wood, and the line of the thing shone there until the house lights came up. Then it was only a hand again, and he went home to his tea.
