Nobody at the inn believed she could reckon a flock with her hands resting in her lap.

The winter of the great fall, the innkeeper's boy went up the road after nine sheep that had broken through the wall. He came back at dusk with eight of them and a cross scratched into the bark of a larch where the ninth had gone under. Grandmother drew that cross on her knuckle with a needle dipped in soot, and she never let anyone ask which sheep it was for.

Three nights the wind sat on the roof like a cat. On the fourth the boy stood at the window and counted the lanterns on the far slope, and there were nine of them, though there had been none the night before. He said nothing about it. In the morning the sheep were in the yard, every one, bleating at the gate as if they had only stepped out for a moment.

She marked that ninth dot as a light and not a loss, and she told us to count what comes home. Now fetch the lamp from the hook, and count the logs in the basket for me, and tell me when you reach the end.
