Forearm tattoo of a city skyline beside a Steelers logo, with the words I Bleed Black and Gold in black script beneath, in mostly grey shading with yellow, red and blue accents.

Pittsburgh skyline and Steelers logo on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a city skyline of tall buildings on the left, shaded in greys with some fine outline detail, next to a Steelers logo in yellow, red and blue on the right. Black script reading I Bleed Black and Gold runs along the bottom edge, with a small star separating the words. The buildings use grey shading while the logo and some greenery carry the colour, and the design is framed in a horizontal band across the forearm.

The ferry men on the Monongahela agreed on very little, but they agreed that Harold Quill could read weather off a gull's wings. So when the snow came sideways over the water that Sunday, he was the one tapping his pipe against the shed window and declaring the afternoon lost before anyone had turned on the radio.

Ada Brennan kept the tally board in the dock office, chalk marks for every result since the war, and she had heard his forecasts before. "You said that about the rain in October," she told him, wiping a porthole in the frost. Harold set his father's silver watch on the counter beside the kettle, the one that had crossed three locks and a flood, and said he would wager it against her shilling. Ada pushed the coin across the wood and didn't look at the watch at all.

The radio hissed through the first half, then the second, and by the last quarter the men had stopped pretending to mend nets. Somebody's cup rattled off the saucer. When the final whistle came the shed went quiet, then loud, and Ada was on her feet with both fists up while Harold sat with his pipe gone cold between his teeth.

He lifted the watch, wound it twice, and handed it back to her without a word. Then he took the chalk from the ledge and drew a small gold star in the margin beside the date, the way you'd mark a boat that had made it home. Outside, the snow kept falling on the black hulls, and the watch ticked on, a shilling heavier than it had been.
