Packers logo and trophies on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the Green Bay Packers oval G logo centred on the skin, flanked by two football-shaped trophies on stands, with the word PACKERS in bold block capitals beneath. The linework is bold and the trophies are shaded with soft grey gradients to give them volume. The design is in black ink and greys, with the lettering filling the lower half of the frame against a plain background.

Mr Halloran taught me to polish brass in circles, never straight across, or the shine settles into the seams and stays there. I was nineteen the winter he handed me the cloth and the key to the trophy case in the hall above the bakery. I took the job for the pay and the warm radiator, not for any love of football. Nobody in Green Bay needed a reason to love it, he said, but a man ought to have one.

The two trophies on their stands were the pride of the place: football-shaped cups, dark with age at the laces and bright at the curves where hands had gripped them for photographs. Every Sunday I did the left one first, then the right, and every Sunday the shine came back a little less willingly. On the third Sunday in February, with snow gusting against the high windows, I unscrewed the base of the left cup to reach a spot the cloth kept missing. Inside was a tin no bigger than a matchbox, rattling with a folded ticket stub and a note in pencil.
The note was written by a boy who had been sent to fetch his father home from the tavern on the river road. It said only: Dad, the game is on the radio, come home before the cold gets in. The stub was for a game in 1961, the year the snow stopped the buses for a week. I read it twice, then put the tin back exactly where it had been, because some things belong to the place they were left.
When Halloran came in at noon with his flask and his cough, I said nothing about the tin. I only polished the left trophy once more, in circles, until the light from the high window sat on its curve like a lamp someone had left burning for a long walk home.
