Hollis Pardue had wound the clock in the brick tower every Sunday for thirty-one years, and in all that time the bells had never once been late. So when the minute hand stuck at ten to four on a wet October morning, he climbed the iron stairs with a lantern and a tin of oil, muttering that the tower had never done such a thing before.

At the top, the gears were still. Something warm lay across the floorboards, breathing slow. It was a tiger, striped orange and violet in the lamplight, resting its chin on the great brass wheel as if it had slept there for a century. Its eyes were the pale gold of the stars carved beside the stone sign below, and they opened when he set the lantern down.

"You've been eating the time," he said, because it was the only sensible thing he could think of. The tiger yawned, and a small silver dial slid from its jaws and rolled across the boards toward his boots. He picked it up. It read four minutes to the hour, and it was ticking.

He handed it back. The tiger rose, shook out its coat, and padded down the stairs ahead of him, past the iron-faced clock and the purple dusk of the stairwell, out onto the wet grass. By sunrise the bells rang on time for the first time in a week. Every student who crossed the quad that morning swore the orange smear on the lawn had been a tail disappearing round the library, and Hollis never corrected them.
