Plague doctor mask on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A plague doctor figure wearing a dark hooded mask with a long beak and a round glowing orange eyepiece, shown in close detail. The shading is smooth and realistic, with highlights on the leather hood and ornate swirl patterns on the beak, set against an orange and red background wash. The tattoo fills the lower leg, and a blue fabric garment sits at the top edge of the frame.

The bell in Saint Orsola had not rung for three winters, and Brother Aldo was the only man left in Vellanzo who knew why. He climbed the tower each dusk with a lantern and a wooden mallet wrapped in wool, and he struck the bell once, softly, so the town would know a living hand still kept the count. Below him the lanes lay silent under a sky that glowed the colour of old embers, the way it always did when the fever was near.

The mask hung on a peg beside the bell rope. It was a thing of waxed leather and brass, its beak stuffed with rosemary, camphor and dried lavender, its round eyepiece of smoked glass warmed to the hue of a coal. The swirls on the beak had been cut by the dead physician's own knife, and Aldo had spent many nights tracing them with a fingertip while he tried to remember the old man's face. Nothing came. Only the smell of the herbs and the weight of the hood on his shoulders.
On the third night of the new year a girl came up the stairs without a lantern. She had walked from the river wall, she said, and she carried a satchel of letters that no one in the town could read any more. Aldo took the satchel, pulled the mask over his face and listened to the bell's dull hum as the first flakes of ash began to fall across the rooftops. He read the letters aloud, slowly, and the girl wept at the names. When the last one was done he rang the bell three times, not softly this time, and the town began, faintly, to answer.
