Owl head on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A realistic owl head fills the forearm, with feathered texture rendered in brown and black shading and a large round eye in sharp focus. The bold dark outline and soft shading around the face give it depth, and the warm brown tones are set against the grey skin and black ink. The arm is held by a gloved hand in the lower frame, with a dark shirt and jeans visible behind it.

The lorry has been idling at the barrier since ten past two, and you have already read its driver's paperwork twice, once under the lamp and once against the screen. Above booth three the owl on the gantry light turns its head a full quarter circle to watch the cab, the way it has every night since someone bolted a nest box to the steel. Nobody on the shift will admit who started feeding it. You suspect Halima, who left in March for Leeds and sends a postcard each Christmas with no return address.

The driver is polite and worn thin, his manifest in order: a load of pine saplings bound for a nursery in Dover. The seal number ends in a zero the printer has rendered as an O. It is a small thing, the sort of error you would wave through on any other night. Then the owl drops from the gantry without a sound and settles on the rail beside your window. Its eye is the colour of strong tea, and it does not blink while you look at the discrepancy. It keeps its gaze fixed on the crate's listing as if it, too, is reading.
You call for a second inspection. The dogs are brought round, and the saplings are lifted from their root balls one by one, their roots shaking loose clods of wet soil onto the tarmac. There is nothing underneath but more soil and the cold smell of diesel. The driver watches you with the flat patience of a man who has done this before and expects to do it again. You hand his papers back and tell him he can go.
When the lorry pulls away, the owl lifts from the rail and follows its tail lights down the carriageway, low over the verge, until the dark takes both of them. You write in the log: nothing found. Bird followed.
