Planchette design with eye, sun and moon
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A pencil drawing of a planchette-shaped tattoo design with a shaded eye inside a beaded roundel, a faceted gem below it, and a smiling sun and a crescent moon with a star on either side. The words SPEAK TO ME NO MORE sit in lettering beneath the shape. The linework is purple, with soft pencil shading in the eye and the ornamental scrollwork, and the drawing sits on a grey sheet with a faint sketch to the right.

Mrs Hale had bought the board from a travelling man in Whitby for two shillings, and by the third night of the winter the little pointer was sliding across the baize before any of us had touched it. Mother said it was the cold settling in the joints of the table. Father said nothing at all, which in our house was how he argued.

It was Ada who asked the question. She was nine and fearless in the way of children who have not yet been disappointed. Who are you, she wrote, and the pointer drifted to the painted sun, then the moon, then up to the eye at the top, where it stopped and would not move again until Father took his hat from the peg and went out into the rain.
We sat with it for eleven nights. The answers came slowly, always in the same tidy capitals. On the twelfth night it spelled out a name none of us knew, a girl drowned off the groyne in 1861, and then the words that had been printed across the bottom of the board all along, which Ada read aloud before anyone could stop her.
We burned it in the range that week. Mother fed it in piece by piece while Ada watched from the scullery door. The gem went last, glowing faintly where the coal caught it, and when the stove was cleaned in the morning the glass was still warm to the touch.
