Planets, DNA and grid on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm and combines shaded planets, including a ringed Saturn, with a twisted DNA helix and a chromosome on the left. A black linework grid curves like a funnel behind the subjects, and fine orbital diagrams with dotted paths fill the lower section. The shading is black and grey, with soft tonal modelling on the planets and helix and crisp, even lines on the grid and diagrams.

The snow has been coming sideways since the coach failed to arrive at Hollin Gap, and by eleven the inn's back kitchen smells of wet wool and burnt sugar. You are counting the guests on the back of a cheque when the stranger in room four knocks, asking for a pencil and a sheet of graph paper, not a bed.

He spreads the paper across the table by the stove and begins to draw. A grid first, ruled in fine black, bending down into a funnel the way a pond bends under a dropped stone. He sets a pearl-grey marble in the top corner and tells you it is a moon with a bad temper. Then a coil of beads, strung on a double rail, twists out from the dark centre. You ask what it is meant to be. He says it is a map of how a thing falls and how a thing gets passed on, and that he has never been able to tell the two apart.
By two the stove is low and he has filled the lower corner with rings: small orbits, dotted lines marking where something was going to be, numbers crowding the margins. A Saturn with its ring tilted the wrong way sits beside a cross-shaped mark he calls a bundle of instructions. You want to tell him the wind has dropped, the coach will come at dawn, that he can go to bed. Instead you watch the pencil move, slow and sure, and find that you have started drawing too, a small sun in the margin with no grid around it.
At first light the drifts have buried the step. He has gone, the bed made tight, and the graph paper is folded once and left under the salt cellar. Unfolded, the funnel has been shaded in, every bead darkened from the top down, and in the bottom corner, where your sun should be, there is a second marble, half finished, waiting for someone to decide its weight.
