Sketched animal head inside a circle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised animal head, rendered with angular outlines and loose, overlapping construction lines, sits inside a bold black circle. Fine dotwork and short hatched strokes build up shading on the head and neck, while the lines fade out towards the edges of the design. The tattoo is shown in black and grey ink against pale skin, with a blurred background that keeps the focus on the design.

The ring was the last thing the Morrow Brothers owned that still cost nothing to hire, so I spent my mornings drawing in the sawdust with a stick, trying to get the horse back. Old Tobias had trained Sable for nineteen years before his hands gave out, and she still knew the shape of a circle better than any of us. She would walk the perimeter without being asked, head high, ears pricked towards nothing in particular.

The crowd in Doncaster that autumn numbered eleven, counting the dog. I sketched her head on the back of a handbill night after night, trying to fix the angles: a jaw like a folded letter, the ears two sharp arrows. The lines never sat still. Each time I rubbed one out, another crossed it, and by the third week the page looked like a compass that had lost its north.
On the final Saturday the tent flap tore loose in a squall and rain came sideways through the lamps. Sable stopped dead at the ring's edge, lifted her head and stared into the weather as though she had been waiting for a cue only she could hear. I had nothing prepared. I simply walked to the centre pole and stood there with my arms out.
She came round to me in one slow circuit, cutting the circle tighter each time, until her breath was warm on my collar. Nobody paid for that. Tobias said afterwards it was the finest act the Morrows ever put on, and he was right, because it was the last. I folded the handbill and kept it in my coat, the drawing still unfinished, the circle closed.
