Plum blossom branch on a upper back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a dark branch with pink-red plum blossoms growing from the upper right of the back, with several loose red petals scattered downward. A vertical column of small black characters runs beside the branch. The flowers are softly shaded with red and pink washes over fine black linework, and the composition is set against a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rubber stamp had already gone down on the wrong line, so I took the brush from my shirt pocket and wrote the correction in the margin, the way my father did before the crossing took his licence away. Ink dried faster in the damp of the booth. Outside, the lorries idled in a row like cattle waiting for the gate.

The woman on the other side of the glass had a tin of pressed petals in her lap, each one wrapped in tissue. She said her mother had kept a plum tree behind a farmhouse on the far bank of the river, and that the blossoms came before the thaw, when there was nothing else to eat but pickled radish. She wanted the permit to carry a single twig, no longer than a forearm, and she wanted the purpose written out in full so the officer on the bridge would not throw it in the bin.

I wrote it down in a column beside the sketch I made of the branch: her name, the village, the date of the orchard's last bloom, and a line from an old poem about snow that has not yet left the hills. My hand stayed steady until the final character, which I pressed too hard, so the brush split and left a tail of ink like a falling petal. She laughed and said that was the best part.

When she walked through the gate, one red petal came loose from the tin and skated across the concrete toward my boot. I did not pick it up. I let the wind decide where it would land, which seemed the only sensible way to send anything across a border.
