Back of a woman with a fine line tattoo running down the spine from the nape, ending in small lowercase lettering that reads october, in the Fine line and Lettering style.

Thin spine line ending in the word october

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black line runs from the nape of the neck down the centre of the back, following the spine and curving slightly near the top. At its lower end sits a small lowercase word, october, in black lettering. The ink is black on light skin, with the line kept crisp against a soft, neutral background, and red round earrings are visible at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomasz ran the lead weight down the harbour wall hand over hand, paying out the thin black cord while gulls screamed at him from the bollards. Mrs Pardoe had asked for the tide measured before the boats went out, and the cord was new that season, bought from a chandler in Whitby who swore it wouldn't stretch. It didn't. It hung true from the iron ring at the top of the steps down to the green water, and when he gave it a tug the weight swung back exactly where it should.

He was meant to mark the drop in ink, but the ink had run dry in the spring. He found a stub of carpenter's pencil in the locker and wrote the month beneath the cord's end instead, small and square, because the highest tides always came round again in October and the old harbourmaster had never troubled to write anything else.

Mrs Pardoe came down the steps with her shopping bag still on her arm and squinted at the wall for a long time. She didn't scold him. She said her husband had gone out on the October tide thirty years back and the sea had brought the boat home without him, and that she'd rather the line be marked than left to guess. Then she asked whether the cord would hold through winter.

Tomasz said it would. He coiled the slack on the top step and left the pencilled word where it was, because the water was already rising to meet it.
