Cherry blossom branch on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A slim branch with three pink cherry blossoms and a few green leaves runs diagonally across the skin. The fine dark outlines are delicate, with soft pink petal shading and touches of green on the leaves. The design sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade, against a plain white wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nell Crabbe was on her knees in the wet yard behind the chandlery, splicing a blossom stem onto rootstock while the ferry sounded its horn past the breakwater. The cuttings had come in a tin from a nursery in Shizuoka, wrapped in waxed paper and packed in damp moss, and she had only three days before they dried out for good. Her father had kept the sailmaker's loft on the quay. He used to say the blossom looked like someone had sneezed pink across a grey day, and he would have laughed at her now, tying raffia with grease on her fingers.

The orchard above the town had been planted by a sea captain who brought saplings home in 1911 and never lived to see them flower. Everyone on the harbour knew the story, though nobody agreed on his name. Nell's knife slipped on the third graft and opened a thin line across her thumb, and she sat back on her heels, sucking the salt out of it while the gulls argued over the fish boxes.
The first flowers came in April, three of them on a single slender branch while the rest of the tree stayed stubbornly bare. Nell cut that branch with the good secateurs, slid it into a jam jar of rainwater, and walked it down to the harbourmaster's cottage where old Mrs Thorne sat by the window every morning, watching the boats go out.
Mrs Thorne lifted the jar to the light and said nothing for a long time. Then she touched one petal with a fingertip, as if checking it was real. "He always said they'd bloom before the ships came in," she said. Nell tucked a leaf back into the water and watched the tide turn beyond the glass.
