The watch is shaded in grey with fine detail on the case, while the flowers use layered pink tones with black dot accents on the petals.

The snow had sealed the lane since noon, and Nell Harcourt had long given up on the Settle coach. The inn at Scarth Pass kept its fires banked for nobody now. She stood at the bar with the ledger open and her father's pocket watch in her palm, its lid hanging back the way he always left it, and she wondered whether the hands had been stopped or merely forgotten. Ten past eleven. Outside, the wind worked at the shutters like someone wanting in.

A stranger came down the stairs with a wet umbrella and a small book held shut with a ribbon. He said the train had been cancelled and he had walked the last four miles, which Nell didn't believe until she saw the slush dripping from his boots onto the flagstones. He asked for the room at the top of the house. She told him that room had been shut since the spring the old cherry tree by the gate came down in the gale.

He laid the book on the bar and opened it. Between the pages lay a blossom, pressed flat, its petals gone the colour of weak tea. Nell looked at it, then at the watch, and saw the same small branch scratched inside the case where her father had never explained it. "He gave me this," the stranger said. "Said it would stop until I came home."

Nell opened the case. The hands had not moved in thirty years, yet the cold seemed to slacken in the room. She wound the crown once, and the second hand ticked forward, and somewhere above them a shutter swung free and the snow stopped falling.
