Pocket watch and roses on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with ornate scrollwork sits at the centre of the design, with its hands and Roman-style numerals shaded in soft greys. Large roses with layered petals frame the watch on the upper and lower sides, with leaves and a looping chain filling the gaps. The tattoo is in black and grey only, with smooth tonal shading and crisp outlines, and it fills most of the frame against a red fabric edge on the right.

Old Mabry kept the rose walk behind the vicarage, and every June she hung her grandfather's pocket watch from the arch where the climbers met, so the hands could tell the bees when to work. The watch had no key. Its crown turned with a sound like wet gravel, and it ran only while someone sat beneath it.

The village children learned to leave her be on hot afternoons. Only Tilly Raike, who was nine and had no patience for rules, came through the gate one evening with a torn ribbon and a question. Her brother had gone to the sea and not come back, and she wanted the hour he left. Mabry shook her head. Nobody got an hour back, she said, but the case was engraved with roses cut so fine you could count the petals, and the roses knew the way to the hours that had been lost.

Tilly wound it anyway. The hands jumped. The roses along the walk opened all at once, layer on layer, the way a cloth unfolds when someone is careful with it, and the bees went quiet. Through the petals Tilly saw a boat coming in on a grey tide, and a boy in it lifting one oar in greeting.

When the watch slowed, Mabry found the girl asleep under the arch with the ribbon in her fist. The roses had closed again. Mabry took the watch, looked at the hour it showed, and let it run.
