Pocket watch and leaves on the hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A pocket watch with Roman numerals and a fine chain sits on the back of the hand, with leaves wrapped around its edge. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients on the watch face, metal case and leaves. The composition is centred on the hand against a dark padded surface, with a partly visible tattoo on the forearm above.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the fire, because this is a story about the Kingdom of Hollin Vale, which sits on no map and never did. In Hollin Vale the king wore no crown. He wore a pocket watch on a silver chain, and every morning he wound it himself, counting the turns under his breath, because the whole kingdom ran by the time he kept.

Now, the king had a steward called Ansel Mire, who was clever with numbers and cleverer with leaves. Ansel grew laurel and ivy along the palace wall, and he pressed them between the pages of the ledgers so the court would smell summer while they counted taxes. One winter the king's watch stopped at a quarter to twelve, and no amount of winding would coax it back. The bells went silent. Bread went unbaked. The miller stood in the square with his sacks and asked what hour it was, and nobody could tell him.
Ansel climbed the tower with a lantern and a pair of tweezers. He found a single leaf caught in the escapement, green and fat with rain. He drew it out, and the watch ticked once, twice, and then went on as if it had never paused at all. The king asked what he wanted for the favour. Ansel said only that the king should wear the chain on his left hand, where a man can feel the hours going past.
So the king did, and the kingdom kept its time, and if you ever find yourself in Hollin Vale, which you won't, mind the leaves. They always know where the hour has been.
