Nobody at the Crooked Spoon had ever seen Harrow lose a hand, so the landlord was surprised when he sat down on a wet Thursday with nothing in his pockets but a silver pocket watch that had stopped at twenty to four. He laid it face up on the baize beside a chipped brown teapot and asked for one game of patience. The landlord agreed, because the watch was good silver and the teapot was older than the building.

They dealt in silence. Harrow turned the ace of spades, then the queen, and each card seemed to know its own place on the table. The landlord's wife came through from the kitchen with a tray and poured two cups without being asked. The tea tasted of brass and cellar damp. When the last card went down, the lamp threw a shadow across the felt, and the landlord saw that the pattern of hearts had become the ward of an old keyhole.
'Stake the watch,' Harrow said. 'Win and you tell me what time it is in the room where you were born.' The landlord laughed, then lost the next hand, and felt the watch warm and begin to tick in his palm. Its hands read twenty to four, the hour he had always meant to leave his father's farm.
Harrow took the brass key from the teapot's lid, turned it in the air once as if it fitted nothing at all, and walked out into the rain. The landlord kept the watch behind the bar for thirty years. It never once ran fast, and on quiet nights he dealt himself a hand and left the last card face down.
