Alice in Wonderland objects flash design

Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a cluster of Wonderland objects: a pocket watch, stacked teacups, a teapot, an ornate key, a keyhole, playing cards, a bottle labelled Drink Me, a biscuit labelled Eat Me, and a tag reading 10/6. The linework is bold and clean, with dense hatching and stippling used for shading on the teapot, watch and cups. The objects overlap and scatter outward across the frame on a plain white background, giving a loose, tumbling composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the kettle has finally given up its last whistle, so I am writing this by the lamp at the lock with the teapot on the stove for the fourth time tonight. You will not believe what Mr Pargeter sent down the cut this morning: a crate of playing cards, every one face up, and a brass key with a bow tied round its neck like a christening gift.

He says it came off a Thames lighter at Brentford, and the bargee swore the key opens nothing on his boat. We tried it on the tea caddy, the bilge hatch and the coal box. Nothing. Then Ada, the lock-keeper's girl, held it up to the round keyhole in our cabin door, where the paint has worn away, and it turned as sweet as butter. Behind the door was no cupboard at all, only a tin of Lyons biscuits, a bottle with a paper label reading Drink Me, which I did not, and the ten of clubs wedged in the hinge.

Pargeter came for the crate on Tuesday. He looked at the cards spilling across the table, went quite pale, and asked whether we had seen a white rabbit in a waistcoat. I said only a watch that runs slow and a teapot that never empties. He laughed, paid me in sixpences, and chalked 10/6 on the crate as if that were the price of a dream.

I have kept the key on a string round my neck. Come up on Sunday and we will open the door again. Keep the kettle warm. Your loving sister, Win.
