Stylised black frog design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised frog is drawn in solid black with flowing, curling lines forming its body and limbs. Its splayed toes and long, looping strokes give it a decorative, abstract feel. The design is shown in black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Past the last well on the Sand Road, where the telegraph poles lean like tired men, a carter named Oswin Pell was walking his mule because the animal had stopped trusting the ground. It was the fourth month without rain. The water in his barrels had turned the colour of weak tea and tasted of tin.

At dusk he heard a frog. Out here there should have been no frogs. He followed the sound to a dry culvert under the road, and there sat a frog as black as a burnt match, its toes spread like a child's drawing of a hand. Thin lines curled off its body, and where they ended they looped back on themselves like water going down a drain. Oswin said, "You're a long way from a pond." The frog said nothing, being a frog, but it swelled its throat and let out one low note, and far to the east a cloud that had sat on the horizon for a week leaned over and began to walk.
The people of Harrow Cross did not believe him. They believed him when the cloud broke over the flats and the road ran brown for three days. Afterwards they set a flat stone dish by the culvert and filled it each morning with milk, and the frog came up to drink it and would not be moved.
Oswin had a daughter, Nell, who asked every evening whether the frog would sing again. He told her it sang only when it was owed something. She is grown now and keeps the culvert. When the sky goes white in August she carries a bowl down the bank, and when the milk is gone there is always one drop of water left at the bottom, round and still, holding the whole sky in it.
