Pocket watch and quote on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a shaded gold pocket watch with a dangling chain and a T-bar fob, set beside a swirling line that carries clubs, spades and red hearts. Black script lettering reads "Have I gone mad", "I'm afraid so", "You're entirely bonkers", "But I'll tell you a secret" and "All the best people are". The watch has soft grey shading and warm gold tones, while the lettering is solid black on pale skin against a dark background.

Dorothy Pearce had kept the hall booking quiet for eleven months, so when she finally walked into the Ashgrove Sixth Form lounge and saw the same brass clock above the serving hatch, she nearly turned round. Forty-odd people were milling between the trestle tables, most of them pretending not to check their reflections in the windows. Someone had strung paper hearts across the ceiling and hung a banner that read WELCOME BACK, WONDERLANDERS, a nickname nobody had used since the school play.

Her old drama teacher, Mr Halloran, was already by the urn, his pocket watch unhooked from his waistcoat and laid on the table like a card he meant to play. He had never once been on time in thirty years, yet he always knew the hour to the second. "Have I gone mad?" he asked her, before she had even said hello. "I'm afraid so," she said, and he laughed the way he used to when a scene finally clicked.
They talked about the lighting rig that had dropped onto Peter Osgood's foot in 1998, and about the girl who had played the Dormouse and now ran a bakery in Leeds. Then Halloran tapped the glass and admitted that the clock on the wall had been running fast for a decade. He had moved the hands one night after the last rehearsal so the cast could slip out early, and nobody had ever thought to check.
Dorothy looked at the paper hearts, the crowd, the chain glinting in the strip light. "You're entirely bonkers," she said. He grinned and leaned closer. "But I'll tell you a secret," he said, and tapped the watch once more. "All the best people are."
