Pocket watch and roses pencil design

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing on white paper shows an ornate pocket watch with a decorated case, Roman numerals and a chain of beads, framed by three shaded roses. The roses and watch are rendered with soft graded shading and fine detail, and ribbon-like shapes extend across the lower left. The image is in greyscale and is centred on the sheet, with a dark board visible at the top edge.

Dear Tom,

The snow came early over Gaddering this year and the hut keeper says the pass will be shut by Thursday, so I am writing this by the stove with my boots steaming on the rail. I have Father's watch in my coat, wrapped in the blue ribbon Mother used to tie round the sugar tin. The chain of jet beads has tangled again. You always said it was a fancy thing for a man who sold seed potatoes, but he wound it every night at nine. I remember that much.

It stopped on the Sunday we buried him, at twenty past four, and nobody thought to start it again. The roses on the case are worn almost smooth from my thumb. I thought the mender in the valley might fix it, but I have changed my mind. Coming up the zig-zags this morning I kept stopping to look at the dial, those Roman numerals still sharp, the hands still pointing at the hour he went.

So I am leaving it here, under the big cairn by the trig point, where the drovers used to leave their tokens for luck. I have wound it one last time and set it to the true time, which is nearly five. Let whoever finds it decide what to do with it. Tell Mary the roses are from her bush, the one she said would never flower.

Love, Hannah
