Roses, pocket watch and pearls design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing on tracing paper shows two roses, a pocket watch with Roman numerals on its face and a chain looping through the design, with a loose string of pearls curving around the lower left. Leaves are drawn between the flowers, and the outlines are clean and even with a little light shading on the petals. The drawing is in greys on pale paper and is centred on the sheet with a plain background.

The band had stopped for the interval, and Nell Garside stood by the cloakroom hatch with her father's pocket watch open in her palm, counting the minutes until the last waltz. The hands said a quarter past ten. Her mother had pinned the chain to her coat that morning and told her not to let the men see it, because men always wanted to know the time when they were trying to leave.

Walter Hobb came across the sprung floor with two glasses of lemonade and a rose he had pinched from the vase by the bandstand. He was a clerk from the wool office and danced as though he were filing something. "You'll have to take the rose back," she said. "It's the only one they had left," he said, and she laughed. A bead broke loose from the string at her throat and skittered under the boards, then another, and by the time they were crouching with the lamp from the back office, the floor was full of pearls that belonged to nobody.
They gathered forty-one. Walter counted them into her glove. When the band struck up again she danced with the glove shut in her fist, and somewhere in the third turn the watch slid from her pocket and landed face up on the boards, the glass cracked clean across the Roman numerals. Walter lifted it to the lamp. "It's stopped at a quarter to eleven." "Then it's decided this is the best part," she said, and pulled him back onto the floor.
Nell never had the glass mended. She kept the watch in her coat and the forty-one pearls strung on a length of cotton, and when anyone asked the time she told them the truth, which was that it was always a quarter to eleven at the Palais.
