Black and grey realism design of a pocket watch, compass, two roses, chains and a ribbon reading Not all those who wander are lost, shown without a body placement.

Pocket watch, compass and roses design

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows an open-faced pocket watch with Roman numerals at the top, a compass below it and two shaded roses, linked by fine chains that loop around the composition. A ribbon across the compass carries the words Not all those who wander are lost. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows, and the image uses only black ink and grey tones on a white background.

The watch had stopped at twenty to four again, so Mam wound it on the kitchen table while the kettle ticked on the range. She said a thing kept going if you kept at it, and she said it the way she said most things, as if the sea might be listening and could be argued with. Dad's compass sat beside it, face up, its needle still shivering from the last time he had tapped the glass.

The fleet came in at first light, twelve boats strung out across the grey like beads on a chain. Ours was the last, the Morag Rose, and Tomas Brennan's boy was at the wheel because Tomas had been carried off the deck with his hand wrapped in a coil of rope. Nobody spoke about the weather. Nobody needed to. The gulls went over the harbour wall in a long wheel, and I counted them the way Dad taught me, one for every mile we had drifted off course.

Dad came in on the third tide. He didn't come up the quay. He came up the slipway with the compass in one fist and the faded ribbon of his old chart case trailing from his belt, and he looked at Mam the way a man looks at a lighthouse he has only ever seen from the wrong side. He said the fog had been so thick he had steered by the sound of the bell buoy and his own heartbeat. He had found the channel by going round the long way, because the short way was always the one that took men down.

Mam handed him the watch. It was running, which surprised us both. 'You were never lost,' she said, 'only late,' and he laughed until he had to sit down on the bollard. I still have the compass. The needle has never settled properly since, and I have stopped trying to make it.
