Tobias had promised Ada Marrin a lock that only she could open, and he kept his word the way his father had taught him, which was slowly. All that winter he sat at the bench under the north window, filing brass until his knuckles split, and when the thaw came he wrapped the finished thing in a flour sack and walked it down to the mill.

It was shaped like a heart, with a shackle bent up from its crown and a keyhole cut at its centre. Curls of scrollwork ran around it like ivy on a garden wall. Behind it he had set two gear wheels, a great one and a small one, meshed so that a turn of the lock would set them spinning. Ada laughed and said a heart was no good for holding anything. Tobias told her a heart held only what it chose, and that was the whole trick of it.
They married at Michaelmas, and the lock hung on the mill gate where the whole village could see it. The key stayed in Tobias's waistcoat pocket, and he never once took it out in front of anyone. Some said that was pride. Others said he was waiting for her to ask.
On the first frost of the next winter, Ada went down to the gate with a cloth of her own and a small iron key she had filed at night from an old nail. She turned it, the shackle sprang free, and the gears behind the heart began to turn, slow as a clock, and the mill wheel answered them.
