Pocket watch with cracked face on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pocket watch with an ornate chain and Roman numerals sits at the centre, its glass face cracked and its hands pointing to the upper right. The watch is rendered with smooth shading and fine detail, set against a dark smoky background with touches of green, blue and red fabric, and a faint bird outline near the top. The tattoo is shown in colour on the inside of a forearm, with the composition filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, the fire is only good for the first hour and after that it is just smoke and talk. You want the watch? Then you listen to the whole of it, because that watch stopped at ten past four on the night the customs men came up the goat track from Lubenica, and it has never agreed to start again.

Her name was Mirela Vass, and she carried her father's pocket watch across the river wrapped in a red shawl, because a woman with a shawl and a clock is only a woman going to market. The guards at the wooden bridge had lamps that smoked like wet rope. One of them flicked the shawl open with his rifle barrel, and the glass face struck the stones with a sound like ice giving way on a pond. Everyone heard it. Nobody wanted to be the man who had broken a dead man's time.
She did not cry. She picked the watch up, held it to the lamp, and said the hands had stopped where they always stopped, at the hour her father walked out over those same hills with a swallow painted on his sleeve. The guard laughed, the way men laugh when they are ashamed, and let her go. That was the first mistake the bridge made that year.
On the far bank she wound the watch with cold fingers, and it ran for exactly one minute before the hands swung up and to the right, pointing north, toward the village she had left behind. The crack ran across the numerals like a road, and the smoke off the river closed over the bridge as if it had never been there at all.
