Pocket watch with exposed gears on shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with Roman numerals sits at the centre of the design, with its dial, hands and a section of exposed clockwork gears visible through the glass. The watch crown and chain-style detail sit at the top left, and ornate leaf-like scrollwork frames the face. The work uses smooth shading and high contrast in black and grey on the skin.

Hold the tiller steady, girl, the lock won't wait on your daydreaming. There, that's the gate. Now listen, because this is about the watch Wilf Harrow carried on the Oxford cut the winter the ice came early.

Wilf had a pocket watch his father left him, the silver gone dull and the Roman numerals worn to ghosts on the face. Tilt it to the lamp and you could see the works through the glass, a little brass city of wheels turning over one another. He never let anyone wind it. He said it kept the barge honest. Every lock keeper along the cut would take your ticket and your time, and Wilf would stand on the bank with the case open in his palm, calling the hour before the sluice opened, always to the minute.

Then came the morning the canal froze hard against the bottom gates, and a boy from Abingdon went under reaching for a mooring rope. Wilf had the watch in his fist when he jumped in after him. Hours later, when they hauled the boy out blue but breathing, the watch lay on the towpath with its glass cracked straight across and the hands stopped at a quarter past four. Nobody could say if it stopped before he jumped or after.

Wilf never mended it. He kept it in his coat and read the time off the church bell instead. Every spring, when the gates first swing open, he takes it out, looks at those stopped hands, and says the river keeps its own hours, and a man does better to wait on them.
