Roses, pocket watch and swallows on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large upper arm tattoo combining two roses, a pocket watch with Roman numerals, two swallows and ornate scrollwork. The design uses soft grey shading and fine detail on the petals, watch case and feathers, with darker outlines framing the composition. The image is a three-panel photo of the same arm, showing the piece from slightly different angles.

You want to know why the swallows come back to Porthgwidden every spring? Sit down, the kettle's only just gone. My grandfather told it to me on the quay with his hands full of net, and I'll tell it the way he did, slow, because a swallow won't be hurried.

Old Tobias Venn kept a pocket watch with Roman numerals on its face, a gift from a shipping agent in Falmouth who never paid his debts. Every voyage he set it by the church clock, and every voyage the church clock ran a little fast, so Tobias lived his whole life a few minutes ahead of the rest of the town. Thirty years he worked the coast trade, and thirty years that watch told him he was early. Nobody ever told him he was wrong.
The winter the storm came off the Lizard, his two boys took the lugger out for pilchards against his word. The watch hung on its chain in the wheelhouse of his own boat, hands at twenty past nine, and Tobias stood on the harbour wall shouting the time at a sky that did not care. Two swallows came in low over the water and wheeled round the mast three times, then flew straight into the dark. Tobias swore afterwards that they had been carrying his boys' names, and that the birds had always known the way home better than any man.
The boys came in on the morning tide, soaked and starving. Tobias never trusted that watch again, but every April he rowed out past the breakwater and waited for the swallows, and he set his hands by them instead. Mind the step on your way out. It's been wet since Tuesday.
