Clock face with gears and smoke on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed clock face with Roman numerals, hour and minute hands and a visible gear mechanism sits at the centre of the design. The shading is smooth and highly contrasted in black and grey, giving the dial depth and a three-dimensional look. Wispy smoke-like shapes spread out from the clock across the arm, and the composition runs diagonally across the upper arm.

The snow had buried the lane by four, so the coachman left us at the Hollin Gate inn with a lantern and a promise to return by Tuesday. Mrs Abernethy, the landlady, gave me the room over the kitchen where the chimney breast still held the day's warmth. On the mantel stood a brass carriage clock that had stopped at twenty to three, its hands sharp as pen nibs, and its face wore a dark smudge, as though someone had breathed on it and forgotten to wipe.

I wound it that night because the silence was unbearable. The gears clicked into place like a tongue finding its teeth, and the hands began to move, slow at first, then with a kind of hurry. By midnight the smoke had crept out from behind the glass. It curled along the wallpaper in grey ribbons and pooled under the door, and I smelled wet ash and tallow, the smell of a house that has burned once and been rebuilt over the bones.

In the morning Mrs Abernethy found me asleep in my chair with the clock cupped in my lap. She did not ask why I had not undressed. She only took it from me, turned it face down, and said that her husband had wound it too, the winter the inn caught fire, and that it had never once kept the hour it was given.

The coachman came on Tuesday. I went down the lane with my bag and did not look back at the chimney, though I could feel the warmth of it on my neck the whole way to the gate, like a hand that had decided to let me go.
