Pocket watch with flowers and a We Have Forever banner

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A pocket watch with an ornate case sits at the centre of the design, framed by pink flowers, green leaves and two ribbon banners. The banners read WE HAVE and FOREVER, and the watch hands show a time near the bottom of the dial. Bold black outlines, simple shading on the watch and leaves, and soft pastel fills give the drawing a classic traditional look.

The watch stopped somewhere past Amboy, where the road runs flat and white for forty miles and nothing moves but heat. Danny Oyelaran held it up to the windscreen as if the sun might shake it loose. "Twenty to seven," he said. "Same as an hour ago."

"Leave it be," I said. I was driving the melon truck my father had left me, and the cab smelled of diesel and sweet rot. The watch had come to Danny in a biscuit tin with a faded ribbon folded around it, its two words worn almost to nothing. WE HAVE on one end. FOREVER on the other. Nobody had ever explained the rest.

"It's not broken," Danny said. "It just needs somebody to wind it properly." He had been winding it since Barstow, a brass thing with a lid rubbed smooth by a thumb, and every few miles he snapped it open to glare at the dead hands. I told him a watch doesn't care what time you think it is. He said I was the only person he knew who could be that rude to a clock.

At the Shell station in Ludlow we bought two bottles of water and a bag of cinder toffee. The girl behind the till looked at the watch and said her grandad had carried one just like it, and it had stopped for him every summer too, and he had just laughed and let it. We sat on the kerb with the sun on our necks while Danny thumbed the crown forward a click at a time, until the hands swung round to the real hour.

It ticked. That was all. Neither of us said anything for a while. Then the ribbon slid out of the lid, and he tucked it back in, and we drove on towards the coast with the wild pink mallows nodding at the shoulder and the watch loud on the dashboard between us.
