Pocket watch with leaves and flowers design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A sketched design of an ornate pocket watch with Roman numerals on its face and a decorative chain bow at the top. Large leaves and flower-like shapes wrap around the lower left and right of the watch, with ink drips running down from the base. The linework is fine and shaded with dense hatching, and the drawing is in black ink on a pale background.

The watch had stopped at twenty past eleven on the morning Wenna Tallow was to be married, and Old Jory Pell would not let anyone touch it. He hung it from a nail above his bench in the lean-to and told the village that a watch stopped for a reason, and a man ought to wait to hear what the reason was.

The wedding was at St Ive's, across the wet fields. Simon Carkeek came early with a cart of ferns and lilies and found the old man at the bench, picking dried petals out of the hinge with a darning needle. Water ran from the case and dripped onto the wood in a slow line. 'Leaves come down in a dry year and the wet takes the rest,' Jory said. 'Your bride knows the hour. Go and ask her.'
Simon walked the lane to the Tallow farm. Wenna was on the back step with her mother's shawl around her shoulders, and she did not look surprised. 'Father left it with Jory the winter I was born,' she said. 'He told me I would know the hour when I was ready to walk out of the door. I was never going to be ready, so I have stopped waiting to be.' She stood and took the reins from him. 'Tell him I'm coming.'
Jory was still at the bench when they came back. He lifted the watch, turned the crown, and the hands began their small honest walk. Wenna laughed, and the drips from the case ran off the silver in a bright thread onto the lilies below. 'There,' the old man said. 'Late enough to be sure of it.'
