The sports hall smelled of floor polish and warm squash, exactly as it had twenty-two years before, and the first face I knew belonged to Mr Abney, who had not changed in the ways that counted. He still wore his waistcoat buttoned one hole out, and he still had the silver pocket watch on its loop of chain, the one he swore had been his grandfather's and never once let a pupil touch.

Nobody wanted to talk to me about the fire in the bike sheds. Everyone wanted to talk about Gemma Pryce, who had sold her salon in Leeds and now sold something else entirely, and I nodded and drank my lukewarm wine and kept glancing at the wall clock above the stage. It said ten past four. It had said ten past four the afternoon the stage lights blew, and nobody had ever bothered to fix it, because it seemed more honest than the rest of us.

Abney found me by the buffet, cupped my elbow the way he used to when I was late for registration, and unhooked the watch from his waistcoat. The case was worn smooth at the edges but the scrolls on the back were still sharp, little curls and a flower pressed into the metal. The hands had stopped at a quarter to five. He wound the crown with his thumb, stiffly, and the watch began to tick, a small stubborn sound under all that chatter.

"Forty minutes late," he said, "and still worth waiting for." Then he laughed at himself and went back to the crisps. I checked my phone and saw it was nearly half past nine, and that I had walked out of the hall without saying goodbye to anyone at all.
