Pocket watches in smoke on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two open pocket watches with Roman numeral dials, one larger near the top and one smaller lower down, set within swirling wisps of smoke. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong highlights on the watch cases and deep blacks in the surrounding smoke. The design is black and grey and fills the forearm, and the same arm appears twice side by side in the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The clockmaker's widow kept her husband's two pocket watches on the mantel, one wound and one stopped, and she would not let the boy touch either. Pell was nine and tall for it, and he had a habit of climbing the cold stair to the attic where the smoke from the old forge settled into the rafters like grey wool. That was where he found the third watch, half buried in a crate of broken springs, its silver case gone dark as a bruise.

He carried it down to the kitchen and set it on the table beside the bread. The hands had stopped at a quarter to four. When he lifted the lid the dial was crowded with Roman numerals, and a thin pale smoke came curling out from under the glass, slow as breath on a window, winding round his wrist before he could shake it off. His grandmother's voice came from the scullery, asking what he had. He did not answer. The smoke was warm, and he could hear, faintly, a second ticking beneath the first, as though a larger watch were somewhere in the walls.
He took the strange watch to the smithy yard and held it up to the fire. The smoke rose and folded itself into the shape of a second case, then a third, each one a little smaller than the last, until the yard was full of drifting dials and every one of them read a quarter to four. The widow, when she came out in her apron, stood very still and then sat down on the water trough. "That was your grandfather's," she said. "He said it kept the hours we had not yet spent." Pell closed the lid, and the smoke sank back into the metal, and for the first time the watch began to tick in his own hand.
