Chrysanthemum blackwork on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large chrysanthemum bloom with curling, layered petals fills the forearm and wraps towards the wrist. The petals are rendered in fine grey shading and white linework, set against heavy solid black fill that forms the leaves and background. The composition is dense and high contrast, with the bloom at the top and the dark negative space flowing down the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had been up since three, lifting the last of the bronze chrysanthemums before the frost found the glass. Her father had grown them in the same bays for forty years, and he had never let anyone else cut for the Thursday orders. The black-leaved stock was the one he was proudest of, a cross he had coaxed from a seed packet sent by a nursery in Holland that no longer existed. In the lamplight the leaves looked like wet slate, and the blooms above them opened in layers, each petal rolling back on itself like a page turned too quickly.

The van was due at six for the run to Boston. Ruth wrapped the stems in brown paper and counted them twice, then a third time because the number kept shifting. Her brother rang from the lane to say the gate was locked and the driver was early. She told him to wait. She knew she could not hurry the last bloom, which had come up pale overnight, its outer petals curled so tight they looked like fists.

She carried it to the bench under the lamp and turned it slowly. The black leaves ran down the stem, and a torn place showed the white underside beneath. Her father used to say the trick was to leave something unpainted so the eye could rest. She had never understood him until now. She tucked the bloom into the last bundle, untied the twine, and tied it again so the pale head faced outward, towards the road.
