Pole dancer and rose on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bold tattoo shows a woman in heels hanging upside down from a pole, with her arms and legs wrapped around it, above a red rose with dark green leaves. The outlines are thick and dark, with flat solid fills in red, green, blue and skin tones. The design is centred on the leg against a plain light background.

Dear Mam,

The fair came through Easton Bank on Saturday, same as it always does, with the dodgems parked on the rec and the lorry that smells of diesel and candyfloss. You'll remember Dad took us every year and bought us one go on the swings before his shift. I didn't go this time. I stood at the railings with Joyce Pemberton's little brother on my hip and watched Marisa Croft hang off the top of the fairground pole upside down, heels hooked on the bar, both arms locked round the steel like she was holding the whole village up.

She's not from here. Her people came with the carousel from Hull and they'll be gone by Wednesday. Still, she looked out at the crowd as if she'd been born in the pit yard, and the lads at the back went quiet, which I've never seen happen in Easton Bank.

Dad's rose won the cup again at the Gala Show. Mr Ferris says it's the best red he's grown since the colliery closed, and he left it on the kitchen table for me to take up to the cemetery on Sunday. I cut it from the bush under the window this morning, the one with the dark leaves that go almost black after rain. I wrapped the stems in yesterday's Gazette the way he always did.

I'm getting the bus up to Hull on Thursday. Tell Gran I've got the job at the hosiery, and tell her I'm not coming back with dust in my hair.

Love, Ruth
