Flower bouquet on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bouquet of flowers is tattooed on the calf, with a central rose, two round open blooms, a bud and several pointed leaves. The tied stems and a wrapped band at the base hold the arrangement together. The outlines are bold and solid, while the petals and leaves are filled with stippled dots, and the image uses only black ink and grey tones.

Now sit down, you lot, and mind the chairs, because this is the one about Dorothy Kell and the bouquet that would not stay tied. The Palais in Margate had a sprung floor in those days, and a band that came up from Brighton on the train with their instruments in their laps. Dorothy worked the cloakroom. Every Saturday a soldier named Frank Ashby asked her for a dance, and every Saturday she told him she'd sooner waltz with the coat rack.

The night of the spring ball, Frank came in holding a bunch of flowers wrapped in brown paper. One red rose sat at the heart of it, two round open blooms either side like saucers, a bud pushed in low, and the stems bound tight with a band of ribbon. He had bought them off a barrow on the front and paid more than he had. He stood by the cloakroom hatch turning the bunch in his hands while the saxophone went round and round, and nobody had the heart to tell him the rose had lost two petals on the walk over.
Dorothy took the flowers and tied them to the hatch rail with her own apron string. Frank, she said, if you want a dance you'll have to bring me a better reason than wilting roses. So he did. He danced her across that sprung floor until the caretaker put the lights up at midnight. When she finally came back to the hatch, the bouquet was still standing there in its jar of tap water, every stem upright, and the ribbon had been knotted twice over by a man who was not going anywhere.
